Christmas is without a doubt my favorite time of the year. Snow. Hot cocoa. The Santa Clause! Nothing can ruin those things for me. Not even the balmy 70 degrees NC weather we’re currently experiencing, or Tim Allen’s conservative politics that he won’t shut up about. 😒
The other thing I love about this time of year? The holiday fashion. Sparkles on everything. 0 crop tops (I prefer to keep my mom rolls nicely tucked in, thank yew). Thick fabrics to stay warm and cozy. Or sweat profusely if you’re in NC like me (that’s called Christmas commitment, baby).
Which brings me to my favorite fabric of the holiday season: Velvet. It’s sexy, sumptuous, regal, and has the bonus of keeping you warm on cold December nights—if your December nights are, in fact, cold. And in my opinion, no South Asian wardrobe is complete without at least one velvet outfit. In my case, it’s a navy blue Poonam’s Kaurture lehenga.
Whether you’ve got a winter wedding to go to or a very desi holiday party to attend, there’s a velvet outfit to match the event’s vibe and your aesthetic. From Indowestern to traditional lehengas, let’s take a look at some of the prettiest winter-appropriate velvet South Asian wear.
From the chain bustier detailing to the luxurious, saturated colors, this lehenga is the perfect choice for a sangeet or reception.
